Botox

You must have heard about Botox and how it can assist in toning the face and significantly reducing wrinkle depth. An indeed, results can be wonderful when you keep an appropriate dosage and accurate injection, and keep a natural look. Dr. Acky Friedman specializes in this sensitive issue, which can affect the look of your face for months after injection. The professional, skilled use of Botox is vital for achieving the most accurate and professional results.

Botox is injected on the top half of the face: the wrinkle between the brows, the forehead and around the eyes (the eye area can only be treated by a highly skilled dermatologist).  Botox is a (poison free) toxin, used to weaken the muscle. This brings to a reduction and even wiping out of wrinkles for up to six months. A complete, visible result will be most noticeable in about three weeks after treatment.

Prior to injection, Dr. Friedman will apply local anesthesia to the treated area.

Botulinum toxin is a product that was formerly produced from bacteria. It is now produced by genetic engineering and has many uses. The two products now available in Israel are Botox and Dysport. Botox is an American, FDA approved product and dysport has an EU CE standard approval. Both products involve minimal injections, fast recovery, few side effects and complications and a high quality result. It has been in use since the 1970s in the field of eye medicine, and later on in order to relieve migraines and cramped muscles (such as in cases of Cerebral Palsy, Torticollis and various Dystonia syndroms).

Botox is used in the world of aesthetic medicine in order to improve the look in areas where there is constant cramping, such as “anger wrinkles” (between the brows), the “wonder wrinkles” (forehead), “crow feet” (around the corners of the eyes), brow lifts, smoothing out neck wrinkles and improvement of wrinkles above the upper lip. In addition, Botox is used to treat excessive sweating in the hand, armpits and feet.

Before and after pictures

The most common area used in Botox treatment is the upper half of the face, meaning around the eyes, brow lifts, brow and forehead wrinkles, and excessive sweating treatment. The product’s action in treatment is a chemical blockage of the communication between the nerve and the muscle, into which the product is injected. In light of this, muscles that have been contracted for a long time (even without awareness to this), causing wrinkles, are released along with the wrinkles in the area. The treatment itself is simple, easy, quick, efficient, “routine” and can be carried out during the work day, and has one of the lowest risk factors in the world of medicine.

This treatment is performed following the application of a local anesthesia ointment, which lasts between 30-45 minutes, however, there are (many of) those who can perform this treatment without any anesthesia. Following a thorough cleaning of the treated area, the product is injected accurately into the specific muscle areas. The effect of the product can be seen about a week following treatment, however, sometimes it takes patience for up to three weeks. After three weeks you may notice the final results of the treatments, and when necessary, it is possible to “reinforce” the treatment with an additional injection.

How long does this last?
The product lasts between 3-6 months but most patients enjoy its effect for an average of 5-5.5 months.

What are the risks of using Botox?
The risks of this treatment are very minor and reversible. Please note that the amount of product used for aesthetic purposes are about 50 or less of those used for treating medical issues, hence the few side effects.

The side effects can appear as a local hemmorhage, and in rare cases muscle weakness and light headaches that pass.

When should you take caution with using Botox?
1. People with a tendency for increased bleeding, whether due to genetic traits (lack of clotting factors), use of blood diluents (swallowing aspiring or ointments that contain Vitamin E) or use of unconventional medicine (homeopathic treatments) – must notify their treating doctor prior to treatment. In some cases, treatment must be ceased several days prior to the injection.
2. Patients with a tendency for frequent facial herpes appearances may need preventative treatment.
3. Patients who previously suffered from weakness/temporary or permanent paralysis of facial muscles. For these patients, using Botox may worsen the issue.
